unabgeschlossenes / left wide open versucht anhand des Bremer Stadtschlüssels eine kritische Kultur- und Technikgeschichte des Schlüssels zu entwickeln und ist eine künstlerische Intervention in genau diese (Stadt-)Geschichte.
Eine Stadt trägt einen Schlüssel im Wappen und die räumlichen Regime um uns herum werden durch Schlüssel hergestellt und aufrechterhalten. Von diesen beiden Beobachtungen ausgehend, widmet sich das Buch der Frage nach den symbolischen und materiellen Dimensionen dieser Ordnung und sucht nach ihren Entstehungs- und Transformationsgeschichten. Dabei schaut es nach den kolonialistischen, kapitalistischen Im- und Exporten, die mit dieser Ordnung in Bremen und darüber hinaus einhergingen, und versucht darin immer wieder Hebelpunkte auszumachen, von denen aus sich andere Formen des Zusammenseins denken lassen.
Im Buch finden sich umgeschriebene Anleitungen zum Schlösserknacken, neue Essays zum Bremer Hafen, kritische Bildkommentare zu historischen Abbildungen und gegen den Strich gelesene Gedichte der Bremer Stadtmusikanten. Das Buch ist zweisprachig: Deutsch und Englisch, dabei sind Übersetzungen nicht komplementär, sondern selbst Teil der inhaltlichen Aushandlung.
Wo die sprachliche Ebene an ihre Grenzen kommt, treten Bilder zu den Texten: abgezeichnete Schlüssel, Recherchefotos aus dem städtischen Raum, abstrakte Zeichnungen und eine Sammlung von Selbstdarstellungen der Stadt Bremen aus dem Staatsarchiv. Dabei arbeitet das Buch immer wieder mit textlichen und visuelllen Verschiebungen. Dadurch eröffnen sich unterschiedliche Lesarten, verschiedene Inhalte treten in Korrespondenz und die Form des Buchs wird selbst Teil der Frage, wie etwas unabgeschlossen bleiben kann.
Based on the coat of arms of the City of Bremen, a key, the book unabgeschlossenes / left wide open attempts to develop a critical cultural and technical history of the key and is itself an artistic intervention into this (city) history.
A city bears a key in its coat of arms and the spatial regimes around us are produced and maintained by keys. Starting from these two observations, the book addresses the question of the symbolic and material dimensions of this order and searches for its histories of emergence and transformation. In doing so, it looks at the colonialist, capitalist imports and exports that went hand in hand with this order in Bremen and beyond. And lastly, it keeps trying to identify points of leverage from which other forms of being together can be imagined.
The book contains adapted instructions on how to pick locks, new essays on the port of Bremen, critical image commentaries on historical illustrations and poems of the Bremen Town Musicians read against the grain. The book is bilingual: German and English. Translations are not complementary, but are themselves part of the negotiation of content.
Where the textual reaches its limits, the images join the texts: traced keys, research photos from urban spaces, abstract drawings and a collection of self-portraits of the city of Bremen from the state archives. The book repeatedly works with textual and visual shifts. This opens up different ways of reading, different chapters of content come into conversation and the form of the book itself becomes part of the question of how something can remain left wide open.
